Put both offers on the same footing
Before comparing a bareboat and a skippered catamaran, or two operators in the same region, write down the trip you actually want: dates, number of day guests, number sleeping aboard, departure area and the length of time on the water. Send the same brief to each operator. Otherwise, a lower number may simply describe a shorter or less inclusive trip.

Seven lines to check in every quote
Exact vessel and date
A fleet-wide offer can differ from the boat you saw in the directory. Ask for the vessel name, departure date, boarding time and return time.
Trip duration and route
Find out what part of the quoted hours includes boarding, handover and return. Ask whether the route is fixed or weather-dependent.
Skipper and crew
Confirm who skippers, whether that cost is included, and whether other crew or your own sailing experience is required.
Accommodation and group size
Compare the permitted day guest count with overnight berths. A cabin count alone cannot tell you how many people can sleep aboard.
Equipment and provisions
Ask what linen, food, water, tender, safety equipment and cleaning supplies are supplied for this booking.
Extra charges and bond
Have the operator list fuel, marina fees, cleaning, catering, bond, damage excess and any other charges separately.
Changes and cancellation
Get the operator’s terms for weather, illness, late arrival, vessel substitution and cancellation in writing.
Which differences really matter?
For a day charter, the boarding window and group rules may decide whether a package works for an event. For overnight sailing, berths, fuel, provisioning, tender and return timing can have a bigger effect than the headline rate. For bareboat, the skipper’s eligibility, handover and bond deserve close attention. For skippered trips, distinguish a skipper-only service from a fully crewed experience.
Do not assume every extra cost applies to every operator. The checklist is a prompt to ask for a clear answer, including “not applicable”, so you can compare like with like.
